It’s the day before Valentine’s Day and there are red foil hearts in the shop windows, pink cupcakes in the bakeries and lots of chocolate. I adore chocolate, but what I truly crave is salt. I like sushi just fine, mostly as a scoop for soy sauce. Everything we ate tonight at Momofuku Nishi was delicious, with complex rich flavors and lick your fingers saltiness. The romaine salad coated with bagna cauda was completely addictive. Bagna cauda means warm bath and is a warm anchovy dip for vegetables, traditionally fennel. It’s a classic combination, the cool crunchy vegetables in warm, salty sauce. This version was like a caesar salad drowning in anchovy- we devoured it and I’m going back. I’ll just sit at the bar, have a bourbon old fashioned and a pile of salty salad: heaven.
